In 2008 the first TelecomONE Innovation Unconference (Now known as SparkINNOVATION) was held in Warkworth, New Zealand.
After attending the first Kiwi Foo, Telecom employees saw that the Unconference format was exactly what their large, multi-faceted organisation needed: an opportunity for employees from all divisions, from the executive level through to front line staff, to mix with externals on an even playing field and discuss how to make their business better. What they’ve found is that this weekend provides a framework where real issues can be tabled and ideas flow, bringing teams closer. Engaging staff, connecting silos and highlighting missed opportunities are just some of the benefits Telecom has gained from their Unconference. By including external attendees, they provide the catalyst for their employees to break out of habitual thought models and ‘think outside the box.’
The success of that first Unconference has been replicated every year since, with more than 500 Telecom/Spark employees benefiting from their experiences over an Unconference weekend.
